Court: At least 2 cars must be involved in crash for leaving-scene charge

The Idaho Court of Appeals says at least two cars must be involved for someone to be charged with leaving the scene of an accident.

The court sided with Richard W. Wright, who in 2009 slid off an icy northern Idaho road and knocked over a speed-limit sign before continuing on to work.

Police charged him with misdemeanor leaving the scene of an accident, and Wright paid a $200 fine, served two days on a work program and had his license suspended for a year.

The Spokesman-Review reports that Tuesday the appellate court overturned Wright's conviction, saying the charge of leaving the scene of an accident applies to multicar collisions, not to a single car bumping a sign.
