Melting snow could flood Wyoming rivers, creeks

Associated Press - April 21, 2009 2:35 PM ET

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - The National Weather Service says healthy mountain snowpack, combined with warm temperatures and possible rain, could result in flooding in parts of the state.

A report released Tuesday says the snowmelt flood potential is high for portions of the Little Snake River Basin from Savery to Baggs.

The flood potential is moderate to high for the Upper North Platte Basin including the Encampment River, which could affect the towns of Encampment, Riverside and Saratoga.

Moderate to high flood potential is also predicted for the creeks of Little Goose, Piney, Clear and the North Fork of the Crazy Woman, as well as the Middle Fork of the Powder River. Those creeks and rivers could affect Big Horn, Story, Buffalo, Kaycee and Sussex.

The report says higher than normal temperatures or heavy rainfall would increase the flood potential.
