Slope Stabilization Along U.S. 93 Starts Monday

RIGBY ‑ Slope stabilization to improve motorist safety along U.S. 93 between Carmen and North Fork will begin Monday, May 4, the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) announced.

Crews, working 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, will remove loose rock from slopes and install retaining mesh on various stretches. Motorists can expect delays of up to 20 minutes as flaggers stop traffic for the work to take place. Travel will be reduced to one lane.

One three‑man team of professional rock scalers will repel down the rocky slopes to dislodge loose rock and to drape the rock face with wire mesh to prevent future rock slides from reaching the roadway. Crews also will seed some native grasses to deter future erosion and to stabilize the slopes.

Motorists should watch for rock on the road and for construction equipment along the highway. ITD conducts slope stabilization (rock scaling/meshing) each year to reduce falling rock and prevent it from reaching the road.

The project is scheduled for completion June 5.
