ROCKLAND - A local crop duster pilot miraculously survives and walks away with a just few broken bones after his plane crashes into crop fields.
It happened southwest of Rockland off Interstate 37 in Power County around seven this morning.
The privately owned farm is located by the intersection of King Lane and Weston Road.
Looking at this mangled crop duster, it may seem to onlookers that a miracle has taken place.
The front's completely smashed. All that's left of it is from the pilot's dashboard back and it's in that seat where the pilot, Terry Lockwood, survived.
"I thought somebody had passed. It's a pretty horrific plane crash for him not being hurt very bad. From talking to everybody up here today, not many walk away from it," said Kael Koompin, Farm Manager.
"The pilot actually climbed out of the airplane and was laying on the ground. They provided first aid and life flight landed and off he went," said Max Sprague, Detective, Power County Sheriff's Office.
They explain he was spraying a potato field on the farm's 44-hundred acres, when something went wrong.
"Bad air is what he hit. Is what they call it. And it put him right down on the ground before he knew what happened. He was making a big turn to the south and as heavy as he was, he was full of chemical, full of fuel," said Koompin.
Even though it may look like a fire happened, it's actually the chemicals from inside the plane, mixing with the diesel that it runs on, which is giving it a black color.
"Ten years ago maybe was the last time I heard about something going down around this area," said Koompin.
Despite this being a rare occurrence, he's found even for an experienced pilot, it's possible.
"He's a good, safe pilot. He's been flying for 32 years it sounds like and has 11,000 or 12,000 hours up in the air," said Koompin.
Recently, the pilot bought the crop duster for about 560-thousand dollars, but, now they'll need to find a new one for the rest of the season.
The Power County Sheriff's Office has contacted FAA who is sending investigators to look at the crash.
A Sheriff's Deputy said they'll most likely have to tow and disassemble the plane to get it out of the fields.
The pilot was life flighted to Portneuf Medical Center where he remains in stable condition.
