Associated Press - July 24, 2009 7:05 AM ET

RAWLINS, Wyo. (AP) - Elk Mountain is celebrating its 100th birthday.

The Carbon County town will hold a parade, a dance and numerous other events this weekend to mark the anniversary of the town's incorporation.

Centennial Park will host living history demonstrations of tie hacking, loom weaving, wool spinning, flintknapping and blacksmithing.

There will also be horseshoe and volleyball tournaments, as well as a Pony Express Ride from Wagonhound to Elk Mountain on Saturday afternoon.

Explorer John Fremont crossed the Medicine Bow River at the site of Elk Mountain in 1843, according to the Carbon County Visitors Council.

The area hosted a military fort on the Overland Trail and grew into a town as ranchers and miners moved in.
