Officials press Sinclair for more emergency notice

Associated Press - September 3, 2009 1:25 PM ET

RAWLINS, Wyo. (AP) - Local and state officials are asking Sinclair Refinery to do a better job of notifying them when emergencies occur at its petroleum refinery located about six miles east of Rawlins.

Local officials contend they weren't properly notified when the refinery spilled about 65,000 barrels of gasoline in May or when it emitted a yellowish cloud of steam and particulate matter on Aug. 18.

Carbon County Fire Department Assistant Chief Larry Trapp says local agencies are obligated to respond when they're dispatched to a reported emergency. He says the refinery should notify agencies of what they're getting into.

A Sinclair representative says the refinery has its own emergency response teams but is working to be a good neighbor.
