CALDWELL, Idaho (AP) - A sheriff in southwestern Idaho is questioning the safety of Highway 55 after yet another fatal crash at an intersection along the busy roadway.
Canyon County Sheriff Chris Smith says Highway 55 has not kept pace with population growth in the region, and he singled out a stretch of the road west of Nampa.
Smith tells the Idaho Press Tribune the highway is just too narrow and dangerous. He says he avoids the road when possible and tells his family to do the same.
The Idaho Transportation Department reports that between 2004 and 2008, 627 accidents occurred along a 13-mile stretch west of Nampa. An agency spokesman says those totals don't make it the worst in Idaho for areas with similar populations.
The state is doing a study of the highway from Marsing to New Meadows in central Idaho.
