BOISE - The Ada County prosecutor said Friday in court the man who allegedly crashed into two Idaho State Police troopers intentionally wanted to get shot.
David Paul Turnovec, 29, of Buhl, is facing two counts of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer and one count of use of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony. At first, he was booked into jail on attempted murder charges.
As reported on KTVB.com, Turnovec jumped out of his truck and started yelling "shoot me" after hitting the officer.
Prosecutors said Turnovec is diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. They believe he had been off his medication.
Earlier that day, Turnovec had been cited by a Boise motorcycle officer for speeding and driving without insurance.
Around 3:40 p.m., witnesses said they saw Turnovec driving recklessly. He then drove into Sgt. Chris Duggan and Cpl. Jon Vance who were stationed on their motorcycles in the median of Interstate 84 at milepost 58.
Law enforcement said there were no marks on the road that would lead them to believe Turnovec tried to swerve to miss the officers. In fact, he actually corrected his course to hit them.
Cpl. Vance, who has served for six years, was treated and released Thursday night. Sgt. Duggan, a 19 year veteran, sustained a broken leg. He was kept overnight for treatment and observation. Turnovec was not hurt.
