Salt Lake City VA hospital delivers first baby

Associated Press - October 24, 2009 9:05 AM ET

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The Veterans Affairs Medical Center delivered its first baby when neighbors mistakenly took a woman in labor there instead of to another Salt Lake City hospital in the middle of the night.

Supervisor Jim Mercer says the VA hospital's average patient is 78 years old and male.

But Inam Razzouk was in the final minutes of labor when she arrived in a neighbor's vehicle at about 1 a.m. Wednesday. Mercer says he and another nurse were called to the parking lot by Razzouk's neighbors, who had intended to drive her to University Hospital.

Fifteen minutes later, Sara Al Masoudi became the first baby to be born at the VA hospital. Mercer says he does not know the baby's weight - the hospital had no baby scale.

Razzouk is Jordanian and speaks no English. She and the Sara were transferred to University Hospital in good condition.
