REXBURG - A man has been cited for not following hunting regulations after investigating a man who was accidentally shot while walking his dog.
The shooting happened at Cartier Wildlife Management Area west of Rexburg on October 22. The Rexburg man was shot in the left leg, just above his ankle. He is now recovering at home.
Idaho Fish and Game and the Madison County Sheiff's office say Keith Penrod of Rexburg was hunting deer in the area that evening. Police are not sure if he shot the hiker, but deputies did take his Ruger 300 magnum rifle. They still haven't found a bullet. Penrod was later cited with hunting big game with an unlawful weapon and hunting deer without a valid tag. Cartier WMA is strictly a short range weapons area.
The Madison County Sheriff's office say they are still investigating the incident. They say Penrod could be charged for negligent discharge of a firearm.
Idaho Fish and Game officers say this is a good reminder for hunters to know the regulations and be sure to know what they are shooting at and what could be beyond it.
They also want to remind people who may be in an area where hunting may occur to wear fluorescent orange to help hunters know of your presence.
