SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Salt Lake voters have handily approved a $125 million bond measure for a new public safety complex.
Unofficial returns from Tuesday's election show Proposition 1 garnered 66 percent of the vote.
A similar measure failed two years ago by fewer than 300 votes.
Proposition 1 will raise property taxes on a $260,000 home by $75 a year. The bond will fund a new five-story police and fire headquarters and a three-story emergency operations center.
Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker and the police department have said the current building is falling apart, with leaky ceilings, broken windows and shoddy elevators.
But some have been critical of the preferred location for the complex across from Library Square, saying it is a bad urban planning decision.
The new complex could be ready in 2012.
