POCATELLO - Close to a hundred people showed up for the last public hearing on the vicious dog code in Pocatello Wednesday afternoon.
The City Council Chambers was packed as many people meet with the advisory board to voice their concerns and discuss changing the ordinance. The tense meeting lasted two hours.
One of the big changes people asked for was to take out the word "perceived" from the code.
It currently reads, "A dog is considered vicious as it approaches in an apparent or perceived attitude of attack."
Many people at the meeting said Pocatello is getting a bad reputation and there's a rising concern for something to change.
"I think that there needs to be a process," expressed Jo Lynn Anderson, Portneuf Animal Welfare Society. "I think that if a dog has been deemed vicious that it needs to be evaluated by the proper people, by a veterinarian or the person who cited it, or trainers who know the difference between what's vicious and what's not vicious."
If you missed the hearing but would still like to have your voice heard, you can submit your written comments to the animal shelter by 5 p.m. Dec. 1.
The next step is possibly tweaking the code and putting that in front of the city council for approval. There is no timeline of when things well be sorted out.
