Idaho county says tighter payment rules needed

Associated Press - November 5, 2009 12:24 PM ET

BURLEY, Idaho (AP) - Officials in Cassia County say they want a better way to track community college residency costs.

The county pays a portion of in-state community college tuition for residents. The Times-News reports that Viki Osterhout with the recorder's office says the county pays about $300,000 a year in lieu of taxes to the state's community colleges under the program.

This year, the county received a record 642 aid applications from community college students.

But Osterhout says many of the applicants fail to list their Social Security number on the forms, making it impossible to determine how much aid they've already gotten and if they've reached their lifetime cap of $3,000.
