Gay Rights Petition Delivered to Mormon Church

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A foundation that supports gay rights has delivered a petition to Mormon church leaders asking them to reconsider their policies and political activism against gay marriage.

The Foundation for Reconciliation has collected about 2,000 signatures on the petition, which has circulated online since June.

Pulling a replica of a Mormon pioneer handcart, about 50 people made the delivery to the downtown Salt Lake City headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Wednesday.

Foundation organizer Cheryl Nunn says the petition is a reaction to the church's support for Proposition 8, a 2008 ballot initiative that banned gay marriage in California.

The foundation is made up of current and former church members.
