POCATELLO - The H1N1 swine flu vaccine has been a hot item for many people over the last few weeks. With people waiting in lines for hours just to get the vaccines for themselves or their children.
Some H1N1 clinics have been canceled because the vaccines just haven't been arriving but the H1N1 isn't the only vaccine that is hard to find these days. If you haven't gotten your seasonal flu shot you might be waiting for that as well.
"We actually have nothing left. We have one shot for a patient that paid for it and she was too sick when she came in to get it and that is all we have," said Lorri Shaver, a Pharmacist at Shaver Pharmacy.
That shot is the last one out of 2,000 vaccines. 2,000 vaccines that went in three weeks. Shaver says manufactures have stopped making the seasonal flu vaccine and focused on H1N1 vaccines.
"It's here, it's hitting. We need to take care of the babies and the pregnant women first and foremost. Because really the older folks have been exposed, we've been exposed to h1n1 through our lifetime already. We're not as at risk," said Shaver.
For the last two weeks Maag Pharmacy Manager Robert Raschke has tried telling everyone he can that the seasonal flu shots they planned to distribute Friday were not going to be available.
People looking just to get the regular flu shot were surprised Friday morning when they showed up at Maag's because the sign out front said it had been cancelled.
"I think as an industry, healthcare workers across the board, we are very surprised to see that there is such a shortage," said Raschke.
Maag employees even missed out getting their seasonal flu vaccine because they were waiting for the shipment Friday that never came. With no vaccines people are doing what they can to stay healthy.
"Washing our hands as frequently as possible, avoiding contact as much as we can," said Raschke.
"We're out and we don't know when it's going to come. And until then wash your hands, wash your hands, wash your hands, wash you hands," said Shaver.
Shaver says seasonal flu really kicks into gear in February and March so if new shipments of the vaccine become available you can get vaccinated as late as December and January.
Local News 8 talked to other pharmacies including Fred Meyer and Walgreens. Walgreens in Pocatello says they gave their last seasonal flu shot out October 2nd and are waiting on a new shipment but don't know when they'll arrive. The other Walgreens stores in the area are also out of the seasonal flu shots.
Fred Meyer says their Idaho Falls and Pocatello stores are also out of seasonal flu shots and don't plan on getting anymore this year.
