POCATELLO - Near the Pocatello Regional Airport Saturday afternoon pumpkins were flying sky high.
It was all for the Punk ‘N Chuck Competition put on by the Idaho State University Society of Physics.
Quite a few folks bundled up and took advantage of the free entertainment. Teams from high schools in Blackfoot, Malad and Idaho Falls as well as teams from BYU-Idaho completed with catapults they built and designed.
Students were competing for trophies along with bragging rights. Students worked together as teams to try and hurl pumpkins as far as they could and try to get the most accurate throw.
The whole day is aimed to help bring interest to science. "It's fun to do and it's fun to learn. And especially when it's hands on, that is how I learn the best and when it's hands on you really get a feel for how things work,” said Dayton Syme, ISU Society of Physics Student.
In addition to all the catapults built by local high schools and BYU-Idaho, the ISU Society of Physics Students built a catapult capable of hurling pumpkins 200 yards or more. It wasn't in the competition but just on display.
