Associated Press - November 8, 2009 2:05 PM ET

PROVO, Utah (AP) - A Brigham Young University exit poll conducted on Election Day shows that among Provo residents U.S. Sen. Bob Bennett has a 55 percent approval rating.

Bennett is seeking a fourth term, but is facing several challengers from within his own Republican Party.

BYU professor Quin Monson said among voters who strongly identify themselves as Republicans, Bennett's numbers improved to 61 percent.

The poll showed Republican Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff had the support of 40 percent of voters. However, Shurtleff announced he was dropping out of the race one day after the poll was conducted.

Shurtleff said he was exiting the race to spend more time with a daughter experiencing mental health problems.
