WYOMING - Saturday night, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill on healthcare reform with a vote of 220 to 215. Only one republican joined the democrats to pass the bill.
Local News 8 spoke with Congresswoman Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming who voted against the bill. She says the bill would kill more than five million jobs, hike taxes, and would give government far too much power.
"So you will buy health insurance that has been approved by the federal government or you will pay a tax,” explained Lummis during a phone interview. “If you don't pay the tax, you could be fined or placed in jail.
“To me, that is the first time in the United States we have ever said to the American people that you have to buy a product or else you will be fined, taxed, and potentially thrown in jail. That has to be unconstitutional. But nevertheless, I believe it is a display of the arrogance of the current congress that a bill like that could actually pass."
Lummis also asked everyone, especially in Wyoming and Idaho, to call their senators.
The bill will go before the Senate where it will need to be passed before it's signed into law.
The congresswoman said she hopes cool heads will prevail in the Senate and that they will rework the bill passed in the House.
