UW: Metal buildings sold were source of asbestos

Associated Press - November 9, 2009 6:35 PM ET

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - Asbestos contamination at the University of Wyoming earlier this year came from at least 1 of 2 small buildings that a Laramie man bought and removed from campus.

University officials say Mason Skiles bought the metal buildings from the university in March, paying $368. He had removed the buildings by the end of April and the asbestos turned up at the site in June.

Documents the university provided to The Associated Press in response to a public records request include a purchase agreement in which Skiles agreed to clean up any debris associated with removing the buildings.

University spokeswoman Jessica Lowell says Skiles didn't clean up the site as required. Phone messages left at Skiles' law office weren't returned Monday.
