Ammon Mayor-Elect Talks Change

On Election Day, Steve Fuhriman beat out the incumbent for mayor in the city of Ammon.  Fuhriman ran on a platform of new perspective, communications and being prepared for the future.

For now, Fuhriman is doing what he's always done, dishing up ice cream at his Sub-Zero shop on Hitt Rd.

In January he’ll start a new part-time job as mayor of Ammon.  Already Fuhriman has big plans.

“I want to have things in place for the next five, 10, 15, 20 years,” he said.

Plans involving: snow removal, fire services, possibly even a police department.  The mayor-elect believes it's time to think about the future.

“We have grown up to be a city,” he said.  “We need to act like a city and take responsibility for what a city is required to do.”

Local News 8 knocked on many Ammon doors Friday, because building, growing, adding and expanding means taxpayer money.

“I wouldn’t be opposed to a small tax increase,” said Irene Theobald.

Theobald has lived in Ammon for 11 years.  She's retired and living on Social Security.  The idea of raising taxes is a little scary for her.  “It would cost a lot of money,” she said.  “That’s something people my age have to think about.”

At the same time Theobald sees the need.  “It would give us the same privileges as Idaho Falls.”

Two of Theobald’s neighbors are frustrated with Ammon's snow removal system.  “In the past they haven’t plowed our cul-de-sac,” said Marcia Pratt.  “It's horrible. we have older people that can't get out.”

That’s why a small tax increase doesn’t sound terrible to some.  “People have to understand if we get more snow equipment our taxes are going to increase,” said Melvin Harris.  No one wants their taxes raised but sometimes it has to be done,” said Pratt.

Fuhriman knows his goals can only be accomplished long-term.  “I think we're looking at a 4-10 year time frame,” Fuhriman said.  “It’ll have to be a work in progress.”

The city of Ammon currently contracts with the Bonneville County Sheriff's Office for police services.  They have a volunteer fire department, one community pool and no public library.  Ammon has doubled in size since 2000.  More than 13,000 people live in Ammon.
