POCATELLO - After a nearly four hour standoff, Pocatello Police officers arrested a man that was armed and barricaded inside a home on Delphic Court Sunday evening.
The whole incident started after a report of a domestic dispute around 1:30 p.m. Lieutenant Jim Peterson with the Pocatello Police Department says in addition to the domestic dispute, there was a man inside a home on Delphic Court with a firearm. The man's family was able to leave the home uninjured.
Officers were concerned for the man's well being and that is when the S.W.A.T. team and hostage negotiators responded to the home to try and talk to the man. After several hours, the man inside the home called officers back, he gave himself up voluntarily and he was arrested without incident.
Homes around the area where officers were called out were evacuated as a precaution and for the safety of the neighbors. Delphic Way was also shut down to traffic during the standoff but is now back open.
Officers say this is the way they had hoped things would turn out. "It was the best case scenario for him to come out voluntarily and not have to go in and put anyone else in danger that didn't need to be. It ended peacefully and that is ideal for everybody. For him and for us," said Lt. Peterson.
The name of the man has not been released and there is no word if criminal charges will be filed. The incident is under investigation and as part of that a mental evaluation will be done on the man.
Pocatello Police Chief J.R. Miller also adds that the Crisis Intervention Training that several members of the Pocatello Police Department completed recently went into effect Sunday. Chief Miller says that Sergeant Ron Knapp with the Pocatello Police Department commented Sunday evening, saying that everything he learned during the training was applied during the standoff.
