Report: UW asbestos preventable but wasn't risk

Associated Press - November 17, 2009 3:55 PM ET

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - A consultant for the University of Wyoming says asbestos contamination from two buildings that were removed from campus could have been avoided but didn't appear to be a health risk for anyone.

Kenneth White, with IHI Environmental in Salt Lake City, evaluated the potential health risks from the incident.

White says in a report to the university last week that the buyer of the buildings, Mason Skiles, apparently didn't take the right steps to identify and dispose of the asbestos.

The asbestos came from fragments of pipe insulation that remained after the buildings' removal in March. The university discovered the contamination and had it cleaned up in June.

Skiles didn't immediately return a phone message seeking comment Tuesday.
