Utah man faces new charges in Ponzi scheme case

Associated Press - November 20, 2009 5:15 PM ET

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A Utah man accused of running a multimillion dollar Ponzi scheme and using some of the money to acquire classic and luxury cars now faces additional charges of solicitation to commit a crime of violence, tampering with a witness and retaliating against a witness.

The U.S. attorney's office on Wednesday announced the new charges against 47-year-old Jeffrey Lane Mowen.

The indictment alleges Mowen solicited or tried to persuade a fellow jail inmate to attempt to kill four witnesses in the case to keep them from testifying at trial.

Mowen, of Lindon, pleaded not guilty in May to three counts of wire fraud.

He was arrested in Panama in April a few days after his indictment was unsealed.

The Associated Press on Friday left messages for Mowen's attorneys seeking comment.
