CHUBBUCK - Saturday morning the Chubbuck Fire Department finished up a 20-hour course for the State of Idaho on extrication.
The fire department teamed up with Denny's Wrecker to use old cars in scenarios to practice extrication. The firefighters were split up into two teams, rescue and medical.
EMT students from Century High School played the part of those injured inside the cars. Training courses, like this one, help firefighters and rescue workers to keep their skills up to date.
"If we train them under non-stressful situations, they learn a specific behavior and they act a certain way on a call. So their techniques are honed to the point where they don't have to think. Their bodies just react and they know what is safe, they know what is not safe. That way when you put them under a stressful situation, they can react without any mistakes or any issues and they're much quicker," said Captain David Daigle, Chubbuck Fire Department.
Captain Daigle says in the City of Chubbuck they have to use extrication quite a bit but the more cars are engineered and improved the less injures they're seeing.
