Free tofurkeys create a bit of commotion on a controversial street corner in Idaho Falls.
The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals dressed as what they termed sexy pilgrims were on the sidewalk of Broadway Street and Park Avenue Tuesday afternoon.
They were handing out 50 meat-free roasts to the first 50 people.
But this didn't fly well with the owner of the music shop on the corner.
He said their demonstration was disrupting his business and congesting the sidewalk.
That's when the Idaho Falls Police were called in to simmer down the situation.
"It's just unnerving and inconsiderate. I don't think it really truly helps promote a cause when you're not doing so in a considerate way and there were very many opportunities for them to be extremely considerate, all they had to do was be on the other corner," said Jim Sevy, Musicare Manager.
Despite the confrontation, PETA says their eye-catching demonstration is getting a great response.
They're on a two week tour and will be heading to Salt Lake City Tuesday night to promote their meat-free message.
"Turkeys have their throats slit while they're conscious, feeling pain, often times they're scalded to death while they're alive, they're stomped on, they're thrown, they're kept in such confined spaces they can't even lift their own wing, they're bred to be so large they can't even carry their own weight," said Colleen Higgins, PETA spokeswoman.
PETA says more than 300 million turkeys are killed in the U.S. every year and 40 million for the Thanksgiving holiday alone.
That's why they say not buying a turkey this holiday season is the best way to say no to animal cruelty.
