One man was killed in an avalanche inside the Jackson Hole Resort Saturday afternoon.
Teton Sheriff's Deputies identify the victim as 31 year-old David Nodine of Wilson, Wyoming.
Around 1:25 PM, resort officials say Nodine was snowboarding with a friend down the "Paintbrush" run on the upper mountain when the slope gave way.
The resort released the following press release:
"...they exited an expert trail named Paintbrush. The two were then witnessed
landing safely below a cliff, but shortly afterwards the slope they were on
failed. Both skiers were swept down a path of snow until it stopped
approximately 200 yards below. One skier was uninjured, the other was
buried" the press release says.
"The incident was witnessed by two JHMR Ski Patrol who immediately went to
the site and started a search. Approximately six minutes after the incident
the transceiver on the buried victim was located and the victim was quickly
uncovered. Despite efforts by JHMR Ski Patrol the skier remained
unresponsive. He was then transported to Teton Village Clinic where he was
pronounced dead. Cause of death is unknown at this time."
Resort President Jerry Blann released the following statement: "We are extremely saddened by this accident and send our thoughts and
prayers to the victim's family and friends. The Tetons have been
experiencing severe mountain weather since December 21st, with over five
feet of snow falling in a very short period of time. The area of the
incident was subject to avalanche reduction work this morning and the route
had been skied prior. It appears despite these efforts, there was a weak
pocket at the trigger point. The accident site was fully investigated."
