District 93 Lets All Counselors Go
POSTED: 5:51 pm MDT May 19, 2011UPDATED: 10:22 am MDT May 20, 2011IDAHO FALLS, Idaho -- After budget cuts of $3.7 million in Bonneville School District 93, the newest decision is to let go of all of the counselors and then rehire the positions. The hope is the counselors being let go can apply for their old jobs back, but there are still five positions that will not be refilled. As counselors' contracts expire at the end of August, they won't be returning to their offices come September. The shock of this unfortunate reality was unexpected, and counselors hope their jobs wont be filled by other people."We are going to reapply and try to remain positive, said Beth Boettcher, a counselor at Rocky Mountain Middle School."I will throw my hat in the ring and hope for the best, said Darren Furman, a counselor at Ucon Elementary School.Furman has been an elementary counselor for 10 years. He said its about the emotional and social aspect of school, as well as the educational.Emotional can range from being bullied to stresses at home."That is what we do as counselors, our main job. Help the student, identify their needs or wants or feelings. Help verbalize those, otherwise they can come out like a volcano, said Boettcher."We teach time management, homework skills, study habits, how to learn and study better, said Furman."Educating teachers is a big part of our job, said Gayln Todd, a counselor at Rocky Mountain Middle School.Counselors in high schools also make sure students are in the right classes and will be able to graduate."The school is my first love. I really enjoy working here in the elementary school, in the school environment. I really love the kids, said Furman.Margean McConell, Assistant Superintendent for District 93 said the counselor cuts will be seen the most in the elementary schools. One counselor will eventually cover two schools instead of one.The district said the reason elementary schools will be affected the most is because they have fewer students than the high schools. The counselors received notice Thursday and are asked to reapply immediately.
