IDAHO FALLS - Cancer survivors, along with their friends and family hit the track Friday night at Bonneville High School in Idaho Falls for the annual Relay for Life.
The fundraiser for cancer research is celebrating its 15th year in Idaho Falls, and has raised more money every year for cancer research.
Local News 8's Karole Honas had the opportunity to act as the emcee for the event Friday evening.
Not only does the event feature runners and walkers from all over Bonneville County who have been affected in some way by cancer, but it also offered food, drinks, a dunk tank, and even free massages.
Those walking around the track say it means a lot to be out supporting those fighting cancer.
"It means a lot for us to be out here, a lot of people out here with a lot enthusiasm and encouragement and support, and that's what gets us through," said Barb Brooks, a cancer survivor enjoying her third Relay for Life.
One of the unique aspects of the event was the appearance of a group dressed up like characters from Star Wars.
The local group of Star Wars fans makes monthly appearances throughout the community. For them, participating in Relay for Life hits home, especially after losing a member of their group to cancer a few years ago.
"It means a lot in the fact that we can come out and maybe raise a little additional attention because we're dressed like geeks, but it really means a lot to be able to come out and support this cause," said Doug Atwood, who dressed up like a Stormtrooper Friday.
Atwood was joined by other members of his group who dressed up as Darth Vader and other characters from the epic movies.
Relay for Life continues throughout the night in Idaho Falls, and is expected to finish at 8:00 a.m. Saturday morning.
