A new study could prove to be a mother's nightmare.
A chemical found in a popular plastic used for water bottles, including baby bottles, could cause a problem for the child's future.
Reusable plastic bottles may be great for our environment but this new study shows it could possibly be bad for your health.
The chemical is called Blisphenol A and in a 45 page study conducted by the national toxicology program, the chemical is most commonly found in water bottles, baby bottles, and the lining of many food, drink and baby formula cans
This product could be linked to health problems like prostate cancer, breast cancer, and the early on-set of puberty .
"I heard that when in heating bottles or something like that like chemicals get put into the bottles and it's unsafe for your children. I personally breast feed because of that," explains worried mother Hillary Cherry.
But little did this mother know the chemical could be transferred through her breast milk.
"Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, I did not know that. It's scary to think that you could be feeding that to your children."
So, what plastics should we be wary of?
In the National Toxicology Study it says; Blisphenol A is a chemical produced in large quantities for us primarily in the production of polycarbonate plastics.
These plastics are typically clear and hard marked with the recycle symbol and the #7 inside or may contain the letters "PC" near the recycle symbol.
The primary source of exposure for most people is through diet, while air dust and water are other sources of exposure the degree to which Blisphenol A (BPA) migrates from containers into liquid appears to depend more on the temperature of the liquid.
So the hotter the liquid the more chemicals are released.
Hillary Cherry made sure to take the extra precautions with her first baby and now she's not sure what she can do to protect her one on the way.
"It makes me angry, very angry because all the things I do to protect my child it might not even make a difference and im going to have to be more careful for what I put into my own body because it might be passed down to my own child it makes me angry."
This is only a draft of the study, which is opened for public comment . A review will take place on June 11th.
