The following photos show efforts to battle the Horsethief Canyon Fire in western Wyoming, as seen from the National Elk Refuge. These present a close-up view of the equipment, retardant-making process and the closeness of the blaze, which started from human causes near Jackson on Sept. 8. As of Tuesday, the blaze was 3,373 acres at 58 percent contained. Courtesy of the National Fish and Wildlife Service.
