The fight in population numbers between Pocatello and Idaho Falls continues.

Recent U.S. Census Bureau numbers from 2009 show Pocatello dropping from the fourth largest city in the state to number five with Idaho Falls creeping up into the fourth spot.

Pocatello gained fewer than 100 people while Idaho Falls went up by nearly a thousand.

Pocatello is known as the “Gateway to the Northwest” and although it's growing, with 55,076 people, it went up by just 0.16 percent.

"I think it's good that we are growing. A lot of cities can't say that. I think it's great looking at the economic times that both Pocatello and Idaho Falls are both growing. Would I like the status of number four? I would really like the status of number one. But, four, five, we'll flip-flop back and forth all the time,” said Mayor Brian Blad, City of Pocatello.

With the population barely changing, home builders tell a different story.

"We're selling homes. Obviously it's slower than it has been. But, there is activity and getting showings all the time,” said Derek Leslie, Owner, Homes West.

But, for realtors like Ryan Satterfield, the housing market's looking flat.

"As far as what we used to see, 3-5 years ago, people coming in from out of town and wanting to retire here and buy a nice house and we're not quite seeing that like we used to,” said Ryan Satterfield, Realtor, Satterfield’s.

Old Town Pocatello is a landmark for the city and they're hoping one day these sidewalks will be busier, but do people really care about the rankings?

"Not really. I think we're close enough. I go up there all the time," said Lindsay Hawkins, Travels to Idaho Falls.

"Not really. Population is population. I guess,” said Elisha Vansickle, Rankings Don’t Matter.

"It's just a number. Just like an age. It's just another number,” said Louie Acuna, Proud Pocatelloan.

While they say numbers don't lie, for our community, it seems they just don't matter.

The top three spots went to Boise, Nampa and Meridian.

Overall, a quarter of Idaho's cities lost population in 2009.
