AMMON, Idaho -- People living in Ammon may soon have to budget more money to pay for their utility bills, after the city proposes to double and even triple water rates.Many customers aren't happy but the city says they need to start paying back a multi-million dollar bond.In 2007, 89% of voters approved the $15 million bond to upgrade water facilities.The water improvement project is close to completion and the city is required to start making payments to pay back the 20 year bond.The city has proposed significant increases in water rates to earn the money.To see all the proposed rates click on the link to the left.“It’s just a mathematical equation. To take the amount of money we owe, the interest that we will pay and how many people we have to divide that up a month,” said Ammon Mayor Steve Fuhriman.The city is holding a public hearing to discuss the proposed fee changes. It is at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at the city offices on Ammon Road.If approved, the proposed rates could go into effect as early as September 1.
