Businesses in Jackson Hole have mixed opinions about the new location of the famous shootout held each night in the town square.

The shootout has been happening six nights a week for 54 years, and moved to the corner of Center Street and Deloney last summer.

For at least the past decade, the event had been held on the corner of Broadway and Center Street, but was moved because of the traffic back-up and hindrance to ambulance access to the hospital, officials say.

In the meantime, the new location has meant positive business for many storefronts near the new intersection.

“We have no complaints here because people come here and get hydrated and get the snacks they need to hold them till dinner,” said Rick Bickner, owner of Moo’s Ice Cream.

Moo’s recently moved from their previous location to the corner of Deloney and Center.

Since then, Bickner says there has been a nightly rush of foot traffic making its way to his store from the shootout.

“We have been busy all summer thanks to the new location, but the shootout definitely helps the cause,” said Bickner.

During the shootout, Deloney and Center Streets are closed down for less than an hour while hundreds of people pack the Town Square and the storefronts nearby.

Some business owners complain the crowds block the entrances to their stores, and they are forced to close early.

“I may as well close at 5:30 before the show starts because I’m not going to do any business, and I think they ought to move the show into the square where there’s no blockage,” said one store owner who asked to remain anonymous.

The Buffalo Trail Galleries has been one of the most vocal about the change of location for the shootout, nearby business owners say.

Since the complaints were made public, shootout cast members have been warning patrons to not block the store entrances or hang on the railings of the walkways.

“The shootout brings foot traffic through here and it’s good for business in general, but some don’t seem to like it I guess,” said Bickner.

Chamber of Commerce officials say they are analyzing all possibilities concerning the location of the shootout in the future. Officials say they will not be changing the location this year, though.
