For kids in families that are struggling to make ends meet, weekends can be a difficult time when it comes to food. Kids can rely on free or reduced lunch during the school weekdays, but on the weekends, it's a different story. That's why the Gate City Rotary donated 111 backpacks to the Idaho Foodbank Friday morning.

Rotary members used grant money to purchase the backpacks from Wal-Mart. The backpack program helps kids take food home discreetly. The Idaho Foodbank put nutritious food inside the backpacks for kids to use throughout the weekend.

"I think of kids who are carrying their school supplies and things in bags, just grocery bags, because they don't have backpacks. I think this will be tremendously helpful,” said Joye Jones, branch manager, Idaho Foodbank.

Anyone wishing to help out the Idaho Foodbank backpack program can attend the Biking for Backpacks ride on Aug. 14. For more information, visit www.bikingforbackpacks.org.
