Local News 8 Turns On HD Translator In Driggs
Viewers who watch Local News 8 in the Driggs-Victor area are now able to pick up a new High Definition signal.
Over the weekend, engineers have turned on the new digital translator, located just outside the city limits of Driggs.
The new HD signal went online Sunday, but the signal strength is still being tested.
A new location for the translator was necessary when Grand Targhee and KIFI management could not come to an agreement on keeping the current translator operating.
The old analog translator, Channel 5 located on the Grand Targhee Resort, was turned off on Monday. The agreement to transmit from the resort and KIFI ended on July 31.
Viewers now will need a digital receiver, either with an HD Ready TV or a converter box to get the signal over the air. Viewers may also have to redirect their antennas to the south side of Driggs to receive the new signal.
With the digital upgrade, viewers will now be able to watch ABC shows in High Definition and receive KIFI's subchannels of 8.2 - Telemundo, 8.3 CW Network, and 8.4 Local News 8 Now.
Engineers tell us they will still be working on the translator over the next couple of weeks to ensure the signal strength meets the desired standard. Viewers may see their video digitize because of the testing.
KIFI is the first station to broadcast a digital signal in the Teton Valley, Idaho area.
How To Get The Digital Signal
- An UHF antenna will need to point towards new translator located at Walters Ready Mix, south of Driggs.
- Follow the directions in the owner's manual of your HD television or converter box on scanning for channels. (The scanning process will need to locate RF Channel 27)
- Once scanned, the channels should identify themselves as 8.1 - Local News 8, 8.2 - Telemundo, 8.3 CW and 8.4 Local News 8 Now.
