BONNEVILLE COUNTY, Idaho -- An innovative way of teaching is taking off in Bonneville County as two elementary schools emphasize math and science.
The newest school in Bonneville District 93, Mountain Valley Elementary, is an emphasis school and A.H. Bush Math and Science School in Idaho Falls District 91 is now a magnet school.
A magnet school offers parents a public school option with a specialized curriculum with a unique focus, like science and math.
“We like to tell our students they think like a scientist and solve problems like a mathematician,” said Jeanne Johnson, A.H. Bush principal.
Students won't just learn why settlers came to Idaho, they'll focus more on the state's climate and indigenous plants.
“We hope that we are taking that stigma of science is tough and math is for boys or really smart kids. We're breaking those barriers,” said Johnson.
Mountain Valley Elementary, is a brand new school emphasizing on science and math, unlike any school in Bonneville School District 93.
“We'll teach our reading skills through science. We will teach a lot of our thinking skills through mathematics,” said Brian Arms, Mountain Valley Elementary principal.
Through a waiver process, parents can enroll their students at A.H. Bush Math and Science School as room becomes available.
In the next year, district administration will develop a magnet school policy, making it easier to enroll.
