BONNEVILLE COUNTY, Idaho -- A pivotal benchmark is reached in Bonneville School District 93 as more than 100 students enrolled this year in the Virtual Academy.Last year was off to a slow start, beginning with only five trusting families, according to district administration. The state gives the district $6,900 dollars per student. That money also applies for Virtual Academy students. It's a saving grace for the struggling district, which recently experienced a four million dollar budget, according to Dr. Charles “Chuck” Shackett, District 93 superintendent."When you have one hundred extra children (enrolled in the Virtual Academy), that's quite a bit of money. But we have a lot of expenses when you pay for the principal, the teacher and the computers but still it's a win-win situation for everybody," said Shackett. The virtual academy allows students to work at their own pace from home, or wherever they can get online. The curriculum ranges from classes on Latin and cartoon design, as well as core subjects like math, science and literature.
