With kids heading back to school, the number of moms joining the work force is on the rise, especially in a down economy.

According to the Idaho Department of Labor, this past year, females looking for jobs in Bonneville County increased by 26 percent, in Madison County by 28 percent and in Jefferson County by 36 percent.

Trends also show that the months of September and October typically see a spike in women entering the labor force.

"It seems like more of the women are more established in life, already have families," said Will Jenson from the Department of Labor.

Michelle Rowe has three kids, only one heading back to school, but just started a part-time job to help bring in a little extra income.

“It's more of the timing with flat tires and medical bills and water damage in our house,” said Rowe, “all these other external things that are not normal, that we needed extra money."

She said it was a difficult decision, but has actually been a positive move for the family and her marriage.

"It's been difficult for us not to see each other, but it's also been good because we've had to take on each other's roles,” said Rowe. “And so in that way we've been able to understand each other better and it's made us feel more like a team."

And according to numbers, Rowe is not alone in making the decision to get a job.

“The more that I talk to other people the more I realize that there are other moms that are working,” said Rowe.

Both men and women are having to give up more than just family. Many have had to take jobs that don’t fit their skill level.

"I loved my HR career. I loved it. I worked in pharmaceutical HR for six years," said Rowe, who is now a waitress.

The Idaho Department of Labor reports that women are primarily looking for jobs in administrative support, sales, food services and health care.
