Community Concern Over Growing Spice Trend

You've heard of spice, but maybe not the kind your kids could be smoking. It was standing room only today at the community center in Idaho Falls for a presentation on the legal marijuana-like substance.

Spice, K2, Black Mamba, Purple Passion.

Take your pick. They all mean the same thing: an herbal plant mixture used as an alternative to marijuana.

"What we're seeing is it's more of an agitated...rapid heart rates. We've had concerns about hearing seizures and such, going to the emergency room."

Shaon Burke is Director of Drug Policy for the state. She spoke to dozens of concerned community members Thursday afternoon on the dangers of spice. She says the legal substance attracts a younger, more vulnerable following.

"It's marketed to them. They're maybe not as carefully asking the questions, who produced this? What's in this? Why is it labeled 'not for human consumption,' sold as incense, but then smoked?"

Sold at most gas stations as incense, spice is easy to get. And cheap. Lincoln High School secretary Becky Holmes says students walk down the street to buy it during breaks...and it's making an impact in the classroom.

"It really is. It affects their education because they're not able to think. They're not able to function in class and they're just not aware of what's going on," said Holmes.

Eighteen states have banned spice or are working towards doing so. Many in the community say the growing trend needs to stop.

"I have some individuals in my family who use substances. And some are in trouble so find they can smoke spice," said Idaho Falls resident Aishie Lindola.

"I don't want any of my grandkids ever getting their hands on this stuff," said Teri Warrick of Idaho Falls. "It would be awful."

The Bingham County Prosecutor's office says it's working with the county commissioners to draft an ordinance that would ban the use and possession of spice. It may take several weeks to finalize a draft, but once that happens, the ban could take effect immediately.
