ISU: Radiactive Sources Missing, Public Safe

POSTED: 9:11 pm MDT September 3, 2010
Scientists at Idaho State University are telling the public not to worry after two radioactive sources were reported missing last month.

University administrators notified the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission today.

They said the quarter-sized sources, known as button sources, are used in nuclear research experiments.

They were signed out of the Idaho Accelerator Center, but never signed back in. The button sources are very small and not dangerous.

“We do a lot of research involving radiation and radioactive materials,” said ISU Director of Tech Safety Dr. Richard Brey. “These sources are relatively minor and there is absolutely no harm to people or the environment because of this incident.”

Administrators believe the sources were misplaced in the lab and said they will keep looking.

Lab directors have established new protocol for signing out the sources, with tighter physical security and limited access.
