A Bonneville County family is stunned, but safe tonight after fire damaged their home this morning.

Shelly Yorgesen got a little more than she bargained for when she headed out on her daily run Wednesday morning.

"I was running by and there was smoke coming out of the chimney, which is normal. But it wasn't the right color of smoke I didn't think," said Yorgesen.

She saw smoke billowing from the windows and front door too. Right away she called her neighbor to alert him about the fire.

"It's a good thing. A little inspiration on that run, which way to go. I almost went a different direction today, so I'm really glad I went this way," said Yorgesen.

Chad Cannon rushed home from errands, and his wife from work. They watched firefighters battle the blaze at the Foothill Rd. home they share with their four kids.

Idaho Falls Fire Chief Dean Ellis said the fire started in the basement around 10:30 a.m., then spread up the walls to the first and second floors.

"It's an old log structure home that has been re-sided and so that makes it a little bit more difficult to get at those void spaces," said Ellis.

Emalee Cannon spoke with Local News 8 off-camera. She said the family was doing alright. They may have lost "stuff," but were just glad everyone was safe.

Family friend Ray Phillips was at the scene to offer support. "When they first approached the area, they were shaking and nervous," he said.

Friends and neighbors were already gathering necessities, like food and clothing, for the family of six.

"They're just a wonderful, sweet, humble family. They deserve the world and I think we all need to come together to help them out," said Yorgesen.

The Idaho Falls Fire Department says damage is estimated at 120,000 dollars. The cause is still under investigation.
