IDAHO FALLS, Idaho -- Reports out this week show new home sales around the country hit a record low in 2011, but eastern Idaho may be bucking that trend. The Idaho Falls City Council gave the green light to 22 new townhomes at the corner of St. Clair and John Adams on Thursday. The project was originally slated to be an office park, but then developers decided the market was better suited for residences.Idaho Falls Assistant Planning Director Brad Cramer said even more townhomes are going up on the west side of the city. Cramer said the two- and three-bedroom homes will initially be for rent.Do these projects mean a building recovery in eastern Idaho?“As far as that explosive 300 homes a year, we're not there yet,” Cramer said. But, he said, there are good signs pointing to a better 2012, like the recent request for a new residential plat in the Bristle Heights neighborhood.“Even only 16 lots, that’s the biggest plat we’ve seen in years,” Cramer said.Cramer added that planning directors aren’t seeing anything that suggests another rough period like the region has seen in the past few years. In fact, he said there could be some big projects coming up soon.Construction on the town homes is expected to start in the spring.
