ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. -

One of Wyoming's most unique highway features is now open to the public.  A roundabout at Hoback Junction opened to traffic on US 191/89 Friday.  There are only five roundabouts in the entire state highway system.

Wyoming Department of Transportation officials believe roundabouts are a safer, more cost effective way to build some intersections.  According to the National Cooperative Highway Research Program, converting intersections to roundabouts led to a 35 percent drop in crashes and a 76 percent drop in fatal or serious injury crashes.

WYDOT's roundabouts are a single lane, one way, slow speed circular intersection designed to reduce crashes and keep traffic flowing smoothly.
