Mormon church officials say an 18-year-old church missionary from Utah was among the survivors of the Spain train crash that left 80 dead.
Stephen Ward of Bountiful, Utah, had arrived to Spain just six weeks ago to start his two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
His father Raymond Ward says his son boarded the train Wednesday from Madrid to start his first an assignment in El Ferrol. The train derailed about 60 miles south of that city.
His dad says his son suffered a fractured vertebra in his neck, but is expected to make a full recovery. The young man left for his mission after one year at Brigham Young University.
Raymond Ward says his son previously survived a rare form of cancer that nearly killed him four years ago.
