After claiming two residences and threatening more, the North Canyon fire near Montpellier was officially contained at 6 pm Thursday. The fire claimed 419 acres. The Eastern Idaho Interagency Fire Center in Idaho Falls expects to begin demobilizing its efforts there today.
Two engines and a hand crew continue to work on the Lava Tube fire at Craters of the Moon National Monument. It is now estimated at 584 acres and the Fire Center expects to establish containment lines Friday. Because of environmental rules on the monument grounds, aerial assaults cannot use fire retardant chemicals. Their work is limited to water only.
