An Army veteran charged with killing a police officer and wounding five others in a shootout during a marijuana raid has been found dead in his cell.
Weber County Attorney Dee Smith said 39-year-old Matthew Stewart was found hanging from a bed sheet during a routine cell check just before 1 a.m. Friday.
Stewart's father, Michael Stewart, insists his son fired at officers at his Ogden home in the January 2012 raid because he thought he was being robbed. But Smith says evidence shows Stewart knew he was firing at officers.
Michael Stewart said he doesn't believe foul play was involved in his son's death, but he accused jail officials of making his son's life miserable and leaving his mental illness untreated.
Weber County Sheriff Terry Thompson denies the allegations.
