Impact of Idaho Falls extended bar hours

Bar hours

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI/KIDK) - An amendment allowing bars to stay open until 2:00 A.M was passed recently. The approval came from City Council.

Catherine Smith from Downtown Development says giving people the chance to enjoy nightlife a little bit longer is a way for the city to catch up with the rest of the state. With all of the bars downtown, they expect a boost in the economy.

"Oh absolutely, I think that for bars to be able to be open and serve their customers later, bands will be able to play later, more social activities going on. It's a huge boost to the economy for those folks to serve a little bit later, for sure," says Smith.

So far, bars downtown have been extending their hours depending on the crowd that night.

"It's a good thing to be compliant with the state and other states around us," says Chuck Chute, owner of Black Rock Fine Wine and Beer.

He hasn't seen a crowd increase yet but he's hopeful.

"There's a culture here in Idaho Falls that has been adapted to the one o' clock and I believe it's going to gradually change but we won't see an immediate change," says Chute. "And as we see that, we'll stay open. I have bartenders on staff either I'm here or they're here to stay open to meet the demand."
