FILER, Idaho (AP) -

A south-central Idaho police officer who shot a resident's dog has been placed on administrative leave.

Filer Mayor Rick Dunn tells The Times-News in a story on Wednesday that Officer Tarek Hassani was placed on leave following the shooting on Saturday.

A video recording from Hassani's dashboard-mounted camera shows Hassani kicking the barking black Labrador named Hooch before shooting it.

Deputy City Clerk Debbie McMahan says she's received about 60 calls from concerned residents.

But some residents defend the officer, saying the small town has a big problem with dogs running lose because residents ignore leash laws.

Resident Betty Mingo says some students carry sticks to protect themselves from roaming dogs.

Hooch's owner, Rick Chubb, says Hooch is usually in the backyard, but he got out when guests arrived.
