Bergdahl emails to family suggest American POW deserted

HAILEY, Idaho - Emails an Idaho soldier sent to his parents before he was captured by the Taliban three years ago suggest he was disillusioned and considering deserting.

Bowe Bergdahl told his parents he was "disgusted" with the U.S. mission in Afghanistan and with the Army.

"The future is too good to waste on lies," Bowe wrote. "And life is way too short to care for the damnation of others, as well as to spend it helping fools with their ideas that are wrong. I have seen their ideas and I am ashamed to even be american. The horror of the self-righteous arrogance that they thrive in. It is all revolting."

In emails quoted in a forthcoming article in "Rolling Stone" magazine, some of Bergdahl's words read like a suicide note.

The magazine says the emails were provided by Bergdahl's family, which has gone public with its own discontent with U.S. efforts to free their son.

Bergdahl was captured in eastern Afghanistan under circumstances the military has never detailed. He was listed as "duty status unknown" when his capture was made public. Bergdahl is the only U.S. POW in Afghanistan.
