Some customers leaving Cable One

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho - Local satellite companies are seeing more customers coming through their doors since cable provider, Cable One, dropped several channels Tuesday.

Cable One said Viacom networks were asking for more money to carry their channels. Cable One said viewership on some of Viacom's channels were down by 30 percent. Channels being dropped from the lineup include BET, Centric, CMT, Comedy Central, MTV, MTV2, MTV Hits, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., Nick Teen, Nick Toons, Spike, TV LAND, VH-1 and VH-1 Classic.

Big Dog Satellite in Idaho Falls said phones have been ringing.

"Losing a big number of channels like that have a lot of people coming in. There is Cable One and then there is us. Dish Network and Direct TV have all of those channels available," said Bryan Davis, sales manager.

Some customers are very frustrated with the loss of the channels. Donn Wall said he will soon switch to satellite.

"My wife has always been against satellite TV, but we have lost all of the channels that we watch and our bill hasn't gone down at all," Wall said.

Wall is also upset his son can no longer watch Nickelodeon. Cable One is offering Sprout for kids.

"This is something he would have watched when he was 4 or 5 and now he is 12. This just doesn't replace "iCarly" or those types of shows," said Wall.

Cable One said it tried to negotiate a lower price for the Viacom package.

"We knew if we accepted that kind of increase it would have a substantial impact on our customer's bill and the overwhelming feedback we received from our customers was that no matter what we did they did not want to see a bill increase," said Trish Niemann, public relations manager of Cable One.

Even though some customers are upset, others, like Monte McCall, love the new channels.

"I was quite happy to get rid of MTV and some channels that I would say have questionable programming and I don't want my kids watching. I really like The Blaze," he said.

Cable One said rates will stay the same. The company said it is not negotiating with Viacom right now, but they are open to talk with them in the future.

New channels will be added to Cable ONE's lineup including BBC America, Sprout, The Blaze, Hallmark Channel, National Geographic, Investigation Discovery, TV ONE and Sundance. Cable One said it will be adding even more channels later this year.
